WNBA fans eagerly anticipated this marquee matchup since their 2024 Final Four meeting: Caitlin Clark versus Paige Bueckers.

Both players dominated the college scene and have made an immediate impact on the WNBA. Bueckers is having a historic rookie season, becoming the first Dallas Wings rookie named an All-Star starter. She joins recent No. 1 picks like Clark and Aliyah Boston in achieving that honor.

Although Clark’s numbers dipped from her historic rookie season, she earned All-Star captain honors. The matchup between Clark and Bueckers delivered as fans expected.

In the first quarter, Clark scored the Fever’s opening points with a 27-foot three-pointer. Bueckers responded aggressively, scoring seven first-quarter points and attacking defensive gaps like a savvy veteran.

The Fever dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Wings 36-15 and reaching 64 points in the first half. Notably, that 64-point half is the highest for any WNBA team this season. Clark and Bueckers, meanwhile, had ten points apiece at the half.

Despite a nagging groin injury, Clark continued to play aggressively, keeping the Fever’s momentum intact. Moreover, Clark contributed beyond scoring, adding seven first-half assists while pushing the pace for easy transition baskets.

She even delivered a home-run-style pass to Sophie Cunningham, demonstrating court vision like an All-Pro quarterback. As a result, the Fever secured a 102-83 victory through a balanced scoring attack.

In fact, all five starters scored in double figures: Kelsey Mitchell 20, Natasha Howard 18, and Aliyah Boston 17. Additionally, Cunningham added 13 points off the bench, including six in the second quarter that sparked an 8-0 run.

Clark finished with a double-double: 14 points, 13 assists, and a career-high-tying five steals, all while injured. Importantly, she is the only player this season to post a 10-10-5 stat line.

This performance marks Clark’s 17th career game with at least 10 points and 10 assists. Meanwhile, the Wings have now lost three straight games by an average margin of 20 points.

Bueckers shines despite loss.

Still, Bueckers starred, finishing with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals on over 50% shooting. She also hit 50% from three, becoming the 15th rookie in WNBA history with those numbers on 15+ attempts.

Past players who have accomplished this include Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Clark. Ultimately, Caitlin Clark topped Paige Bueckers in their first matchup as the WNBA’s next-generation leaders.

As the league continues to grow, Clark and Bueckers will lead a compelling rivalry for years to come
