The NBA kept storylines alive Monday night with the annual Draft Lottery. Dallas Mavericks fans endured a tumultuous season after GM Nico Harrison traded superstar Luka Doncic.
With just a 1.8% chance of winning the lottery, the Mavericks clinched the No. 1 overall pick. They now have the chance to select Duke freshman sensation Cooper Flagg.
San Antonio, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Utah rounded out the top five, left stunned by Dallas’s improbable win. Utah had the highest odds to claim the top pick, according to ESPN.
Trading Doncic affected the Mavericks on and off the court. Ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and sponsorships could drop nearly $100 million.
Winning the draft lottery changes that. Cooper Flagg emerges as the apparent successor, ushering in the post-Doncic era.
Flagg is a 6’8”, 220-pound, highly skilled two-way player. He excelled at Duke, standing out nationally after high school in Maine. He’s the only freshman since 1980-81 to average 19+ points, 7+ rebounds, 4+ assists, a steal, and a block per game while shooting at least 45% from the field and 35% from three.
Flagg joins an elite list of freshmen (Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Tyreke Evans) with a usage percentage over 30 and at least three defensive win shares in a season since 2002-03.
Flagg brings a new dynamic to the Mavericks, contrasting with Doncic’s grounded game. The 18-year-old phenom, already a name in the endorsement world with deals from New Balance, New Era, and Gatorade, is a fierce competitor, much like Doncic. From his standout freshman season at Duke to his high school days at Montverde, Florida, Flagg has always attracted attention. Get ready for a more high-flying game with Flagg on the court.
While Dallas fans may forever mourn the loss of Doncic, who they never had the chance to see in his prime, Flagg provides an excellent substitute because of his exceptional two-way ability.
