USMNT Team Woes Hope To End With Mauricio Pochettino Hire

Soccer has held the attention of people from across the globe, from young to rich and poor, everywhere. Until a couple of decades ago, the U.S. did not have the most significant number of soccer fans. All of this has changed with the advent of the internet and streaming, along with the rising popularity of the World Cup. 

The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team has become a beacon of success, with players like Alex Morgan and Meghan Rapinoe leading the charge. Their victories, including the Women’s World Cup in 1991, 1999, 2915, and 2019, five Olympic gold medals, championships, and one CONCACAF W Gold Cup, made them the world's most successful women’s soccer team. Their achievements inspire a generation of young players and stand as a testament to the potential of U.S. soccer.

The USMNT (United States Men's National Team) has had a challenging run recently, often at the bottom of the scoreboard. Despite the efforts of several coaches, the team has struggled to break into the top four teams in major tournaments like the World Cup or the Copa America. Over the past decade, the team has been under the guidance of coaches such as Jürgen Klinsmann (2011-2016), Bruce Arena (2017), David Sarachan (2017-2018), Anthony Hudson (2023), B. J. Callahan (2023), and Gregg Berhalter (2023-2024).

 Once upon a time, Jürgen Klinsmann was a highly successful player who helped Germany win many awards and titles throughout the Euro and World Cup. However, despite being European, he couldn’t lead the U.S. men’s team to victory, and neither could Anthony Hudson.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as Mauricio Pochettino, an Argentinian,  became the head coach for the U.S. Men’s Team on Tuesday. Unlike the other U.S. Men’s Team coaches, Pochettino has a proven track record of success, having coached many successful professional soccer teams, such as Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. His managerial style, mainly his focus on player development, has earned him high praise from many players he has coached. 

If this speculation is accurate, it could significantly mark a turning point for the U.S. Men's Soccer Team if he can help them overcome whatever obstacles and pressures they face. There is speculation that Pochettino’s salary will be around six million dollars. While it may be lower than his salaries from the other clubs he managed, it will make him the history's highest-paid U.S. Men’s Soccer manager.

Pochettino seems to understand that the player’s greatest strength is their mentality and strives to help them become stronger mentally. While it would be a fantastic win for the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team to score a coach of such caliber to join the roster, it is still speculation until Pochettino and the Men’s Team begin playing matches. However, it is still hard to understand why the Women’s Team is much more successful than the Men’s Team.

They have had a mix of European and American coaches throughout the last decade, yet the results speak for themselves. Maybe, with Pochettino’s help, the men’s team can finally overcome the odds as they look to prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
