The Utah Jazz moved quickly to end trade rumors surrounding All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen. They signed the Finnish star to a massive five-year, $238 million contract extension, ensuring his future with the team.
This deal makes Markkanen the highest-paid player in franchise history and removes him from the 2024-25 season trade block. The timing was critical, as Markkanen became extension-eligible on August 6.
Under the terms of the contract, Markkanen cannot be traded for at least six months, which extends past the NBA trade deadline of February 6, 2025.
The Golden State Warriors targeted Markkanen, the former 2023 All-Star and Most Improved Player of the Year. The Warriors wanted to pair his skillset alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Trade talks fell apart when the Warriors hesitated to include sophomore Brandin Podziemski in a potential deal that also involved first-round picks and Moses Moody. Since no team matched Utah’s asking price, the Jazz opted to secure Markkanen long-term, locking him through the 2028-29 season.
Markkanen expressed confidence in the Jazz organization’s foundation, according to The Athletic. The team hopes to continue building around him, especially with a loaded 2025 class, headlined by Duke sensation Cooper Flagg.
If the Jazz fail to land a top prospect next year, they may explore trading Markkanen to a playoff contender. At 27, he is in his prime, and his spacing ability and three-level scoring make him a valuable asset for any contender.
